Pixar artist redesigns the emoticon for Facebook

Oh dear! Facebook are aiming to roll out emoticons in their status updates. Cringe now! But wait… they have hired Pixar story artist Matt Jones to redesign the traditional smiley face – could this actually not be too cheesy? or should we not expect too much?

Apparently these redesigned emoticons will be able to convey more complex emotions such as contemplation, admiration, affirmation, weakness and gratitude—to name but a few. “Facebook was canny enough to realize that traditional emoticons are quite bland,” said Jones. “At Pixar we consider emotional states every day with every drawing we make. Our work is informed by the many years of study we do, constantly studying people’s gestures and expressions in real life.”

What do you think? Do we need new smiley faces? or is it overkill?
